Young people can join Beavers in the three months leading up to their 6th birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cubs, at the age of 8 years. Easily recognised by their distinctive turquoise sweatshirts, Beavers enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. Beavers began in 1982 and are the youngest section in the Scouting Family. Both boys and girls, can join after Just befor their sixth birthday. They ‘swim-up’ to the Cub section when they are eight. The Beaver Motto is ‘Be Prepared’. Beaver activities aim towards having Fun and making Friends and an exciting mix of adventure and achievement which the Beavers will enjoy whilst in the colony. Youngsters of this age like to ask ‘why?’, start to develop values and beliefs, are sensitive, aware and critical. They are developing hand and finger control, using senses to try and make sense of the world around them, bound with energy and enthusiasm, curious, active, need to be involved, copying behaviour, more able to share and take turns, impatient if made to wait too long. There are opportunities to gain awards and badges, which are given in recognition of the effort made by each child at their own level of development and understanding. Take a look at the Awards and Badges to see what they can do! The 103rd Beavers have the opportunity to attend sleepovers, often the first time a young person spends a night away from home.
